Good News: Fitness Reduces Risk of Disease!
Hey there, Velocity fam! Here’s some exciting news: fitness can actually reduce your risk of disease — even more than simply focusing on body weight!
If you’ve ever felt like you’re stuck on the weight-loss treadmill, this could be just the motivation you need to shift your mindset. Let’s break it down!

Cardio Fitness: The Game Changer for Health
We recently came across an article in Men’s Health that highlighted some really interesting findings: cardiorespiratory fitness (think: how well your heart and lungs work) is a far better predictor of your health than just focusing on body weight.
The study, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, dove into 20 research articles and found that improving cardio fitness significantly reduces your risk of cardiovascular disease — even if your weight doesn’t budge. So, if you’re working on getting your heart and lungs in shape, you’re already winning, no matter what the scale says!
This is great news if you’ve been struggling to hit a specific weight goal. You don’t have to wait until you shed those last few pounds to start seeing health benefits. Movement and improved fitness are the key!
It’s Not Just About Cardio
Now, don’t get us wrong — improving your cardiovascular fitness is huge for overall health. But, it’s not the whole picture. At Velocity Strength and Performance, we focus on a holistic approach to fitness, which includes strength training, flexibility, balance, and even nutrition.
By training for all aspects of fitness (not just cardio), you can make progress faster. This approach also has massive benefits for mental health, self-esteem, and quality of life. Plus, we’ve seen that when you improve strength and endurance along with cardio, weight loss and health markers improve a lot more quickly!
So while cardio is important, don’t forget about building your strength, improving flexibility, and working on your balance. If you focus on your entire fitness, the results will be so much more rewarding.

General Movement is Great, But Specific Training is Better
Sure, general movement is always a good start (especially if you’ve been a little inactive in the past). But if you really want to maximize your fitness, you need a plan. Walking 20 minutes a day can be a great start, but it’s not going to take you to your peak fitness level.
At Velocity, we tailor your cardio plan to meet your needs and goals. With our coaching, you’ll get specific, expert-led training that’s designed just for you. We’ll help you figure out exactly what to do, when to do it, and why — so you see progress faster.
