October 2023 marked a significant turning point for Allison Wade. With her daughter heading off to college, she found herself at a crossroads. “I joined because, after years of focusing on my children’s goals and dreams, it was time for me to start focusing on getting healthier and focusing on myself,” Allison recalls. “With my daughter leaving for college, I no longer had any excuses.”
Like many who step into a new chapter, Allison had her reservations. “I’m not sure what I expected,” she admits. “I worried that I would struggle and not be able to keep up.” However, Allison quickly discovered that Velocity Sports Norwood was more than just a gym; it was a place where every member’s journey is honored, and every challenge is met with support. “Everything was modified as needed, and within about a month, I felt myself getting stronger and my stamina improving.”
For Allison, one of the most profound changes has been learning to prioritize herself. “The biggest change is making time for myself and prioritizing my gym days over everything,” she shares. “In the past, I would cancel going to the gym to accommodate other people. Now I schedule my gym sessions in advance and add them to my calendar the same way I do any other event that can’t be missed.”
Her sense of pride is palpable as she reflects on her progress. “I’m proud of how much my stamina has improved. I’m also proud that I’m usually willing to try something once, even if it looks challenging, and seeing improvements in my ability to do certain things like weighted bear crawls and box jumps. I love box jumps.”
However, the road hasn’t been without its challenges. “I experienced about six weeks of illness which really set me back,” Allison explains. “It was intimidating coming to class and feeling like I was starting from less than zero. I’m happy to say after a few weeks, I finally feel like I found my strength and stamina again.”
Looking ahead, Allison is determined to keep moving forward. “I have lost about 13 pounds so far,” she notes, adding that while weight loss was never her ultimate goal, it’s been a welcome outcome. “My ultimate goal is to keep prioritizing my health, stay active with a balance of cardio and strength training, and get at least 10,000 quality steps a day. I’d also like to improve my blood pressure to the point where I don’t need medication anymore.”
Allison’s advice for anyone considering their fitness journey is simple but powerful: “I would say set a date and do it. Don’t make excuses about why it’s not a good time or think of all the other things you have to do. It is literally an hour of your day and, in my opinion, the best hour of the day.”
At Velocity Sports Norwood, Allison has found not just a workout routine, but a community. “I love how supportive everyone in the class is, from the trainers to other members. When you are struggling to get the last set in and think you can’t go any further, it is nice to have folks cheering you on.”
Allison Wade’s journey is a testament to the power of taking that first step, no matter how uncertain it may seem. With determination, support, and a commitment to self-care, she is not only reclaiming her health but also discovering new strengths along the way.
